Why cant members of congress vote by email, phone or proxy?

I can understand why the congressional rules were written way back in the day, but times have changed. Shouldn’t a member of congress who is on the road campaigning be able to vote from a distance?
The votes are a matter of public record, it would be obvious if someone had hacked the voting.
So J K you’ve never had a conference call?
hindlegs, it can be as simple as the pol going on TV and saying “I didn’t vote that way.” It’s not a secret ballot like electoral voting.

  1. Congress has been “phoning it in” for years.

  2. kinda risky, don’t ya think? tons of people hack the internet daily

  3. to high risk 4 fraud or mistake

  4. I don’t personally think so…

Email and phone can be hacked easily.

    EDIT:

Sure, votes are public record….but lets say your vote gets switched on a very important issue such as war or abortion…
I don’t want my money and time being wasted so that they can triple-check to make sure they weren’t hacked.

  5. Maybe they can vote by text message…. It would be too easy to manipulate a vote… Its bad enough that there are lobbyists in Washington, but if there vote was subject to a computer hacker it would be twice as bad..

  6. You do not see voters casting their ballots by email or telephone. They go to the polls.

Likewise, Congress members go to the Capitol to vote, not use email or telephone to vote.

  7. We don’t pay those people for road trips, vacation junkets & to run around campaigning for an election that’s a 1.5 yrs away. We pay them to go to work & take care of our business.
If they want me at work making money to pay taxes, I expect them to be at work making decent decisions.
If I can’t phone in or email my job duties, they shouldn’t be able to either.

  8. One of the other issues as I see it, besides the possibility of fraud or hackers, is that they are paid by us to do a job. Unfortunately when you review the record, there are several of them that fail to understand they are in Washington DC to not only work but to work for us. Too many times Congressional members miss votes or fail to do the research prior to voting. They fail to represent their constituents but prefer to represent their political party.

There are ways for Congressional members to proxy votes if needed. If its truly important they need to get their ***** back to DC/

  9. Not until they ratify the Congressional Constitution.
