what to do with a dishonorable person
in this small midwest farming community, we have an individual with no military experience but a seemingly respectable businessman, who has made a comment which has my hackles raised,,,,, while talking with 2 other individuals he made the statement,,,, “you can wipe my a_ _ with the american flag”,,,,
i have thought about what can be done but i really don’t want to go against the law,,,,, then i thought of a veteran writing, emailing campaign to publicly humiliate the individual,,,,,
any thoughts out there???

You could write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper describing the incident and expressing your outrage. That should get enough awareness in the community to have an impact on him. HOWEVER, I hope you have the ability to back up your statement so he doesn’t turn around and hit you with a slander suit… Just a word of caution there… although you could always send the letter anonymously, but then the newspaper might not use it.
Another thought… If you have a local radio talk show, you could call in to that and discuss it.
Edit: I understand Erica’s sentiments, but freedom of speech goes both ways. Why should you be afraid to state your outrage? Yes, he has a right to say what he said, but you have an equal right to disagree… and disagree vocally.
Why are you Americans so wrapped up about your flag? Are you not a free country? You might not agree with his comment but saying “you don’t really want to go against the law” makes you no better than him.
He is entitled to his opinion without you humiliating him…why not debate the issue with him..that would be the intelligent thing to do wouldn’t it?
From a Brit point of view you are just living up to the stereotype of a small minded American…surely you are not really like that are you?
I definatly know where you are coming from. I was raised in a small farming town in Kentucky where everyone has respect for our military and the flag. Not just that, but respect for each other.
Now that being said…sigh…unfortunetly that dumb guy has the right to say those things. You (thank you for your service) and I and other military people fight for his first admenmant right. We may not like the trash he speaks, but he is free to say those things.
I wouldn’t go to the paper or radio, just because that will stir up other liberal hippies to come to your town and defend his “right”. I say, give him the cold shoulder and everytime he does or says something reply with a sarcastic comment. For example, he says “Hey man where are your bathrooms” you can say “Over there, but oh sorry we are fresh out of American flags in there”. Know what I mean?
Good luck, and dont let this one guy get your American spirit down!
There is probably nothing publicly that would humiliate him and achieve you the level of satisfaction that you feel you need. Since you are from a small community, I’m assuming you know this individual … and since you are a veteran, I believe confronting him and understanding why he said what he did would be the best option if you could control your demeanor (no yelling, threatening, assaulting, etc). Honesty of your point of view with a calm demeanor would bring a greater sense of peace about the situation than would slanderous propaganda that will cost you money and a lot more of your time.
He has the right to say that. You have the right to be offended by that and refuse to do any business with him.
Look, as despicable as that is, that is his right to say that. Our men and women are over there, right now, fighting so that we can maintain our freedom AND try to bring these same freedoms to that country. If you start trying to limit people’s freedoms, you are making every death and injury mean nothing. Do I like hearing things like that, knowing my husband may die over there for someone like that? Hell no. But freedom of speech is freedom speech….you can’t pick and choose who or what you want to hear. The guy is a scumbag…just ignore him.
Unfortunately, the freedom our veterans fight to protect gives him the right to say such things. I know of an individual that is flying the American flag upside down “in protest of the war.” He claims to support our military but he too has the right to do such stupid ****. I would just do my best to avoid doing business with such a person and if asked why, I’d tell person what was said. It’s not slander if it’s true.
People have a right to free speech regardless of whether you find it offensive. Let it go. If you don’t like him, don’t associate with him.
Publish a quote of his comments in the local newspaper! And involve the local VFW and American Legion. Then ignore him…
Lest we forget…we, in the United States of America do have the Right of free speech; however, in the definition of the word when written…Right = freedom and responsibility.
You are responsible and he obviously does not know what the word means.
And…thank you for your service!
cheekybe…
Yes it is a free country and people have the right to have different opinions. That being said, that man needs to respect the country he’s in and appreciate the land he’s living on. To say such a rude and disrespectufl comment is not appreciated when we have troops dieing to keep his a** safe and living on this land. If he doesn’t like America then why does he live here?
It’s like a foreigner who moves here and we get angry when they don’t speek English. It’s not that we want them to foget their herritage, we just want them to appreciate America and respect it as well. They can hang their county’s flag up…under the American flag, otherwise they should go back to their home land if they don’t appreciate the free land they live on.
Why worry about it. He exercised his right to free speech. Isn’t that why we took our oath as well as serve the country in the military. Better to just ignore it, cease doing business with this individual, and if you are that upset about it confront the individual.
Stomp his face in. And to the “cheekeybear” or whatever you are. How about if I wiped my a*s on your queens face? It’s a free country there, too, isn’t it. Oh, wait, don’t you have the B.C.P.? British Communist Party?
