“In the month of June, supporters like you helped raise $52 million. And together with the DNC, we now have nearly $72 million in the bank.” David Plouffe, Campaign Manager, Obama for America

Here, in September, 2008, we are being told that our economy is in a meltdown, the stock market is reeling, politicians are finger-pointing (what’s new?), and we’re being asked to support a “bailout” program that will eventually burden the American taxpayer with over a TRILLION dollars in additional debt, or face a financial armageddon. There is plenty of blame to go around, but the following has to be regarded as an example of one of the worst abuses of power in the financial world, ever. It’s a short read, but it speaks volumes about how power corrupts when no one cares enough to expose it, and demand that it be corrected. If you’re wondering how we got into this mess, you need to read this. Three Men who brought down Wall Street
Kevin Bennett

Here is a quick look into three former Fannie Mae executives who have brought down Wall Street.

Be sure to read the ‘where they are now’ at the end!!

1. Franklin Raines headed the Office of Management and Budget in the Clinton administration, before he became Chairman and Chief Executive Officer at Fannie Mae. Raines was forced to retire from his position with Fannie Mae in 2006 when auditing discovered severe irregulaties in Fannie Mae’s accounting activities. At the time of his departure The Wall Street Journal noted,
Raines, who long defended the company’s accounting despite mounting evidence that it wasn’t proper, issued a statement late Tuesday conceding that ‘mistakes were made’ and saying he would assume responsibility as he had earlier promised. News reports indicate the
company was under growing pressure from regulators to shake up its management in the wake of findings that the company’s books ran afoul of generally accepted accounting principles for four years.’

Fannie Mae had to reduce
its surplus by $9 billion. Raines left with a ‘golden parachute valued at $240 Million in benefits. The Government filed suit against Raines when the depth of the accounting scandal became clear. Read more here: http://housingdoom.com/2006/12/18/fannie-charges/>http://housingdoom.com/2006/12/18/fannie-charges/

The Government noted, ‘The 101 charges reveal how the

individuals improperly manipulated earnings to maximize their bonuses, while knowingly neglecting accounting systems and internal controls, misapplying over twenty accounting principles and misleading the regulator and the public. The Notice explains how they submitted six years of misleading and inaccurate accounting statements and inaccurate capital reports that enabled them to grow Fannie Mae in an unsafe and unsound manner.’ These charges were made in 2006. The Court ordered Raines to return $50 Million Dollars he received in bonuses based on the miss-stated Fannie Mae profits.

2.Tim Howard – Howard was a 22-year veteran of Fannie Mae when he became Chief Financial Officer in 1990 and was named Vice Chairman in 2003.

Howard was considered ‘a stable pattern of earnings’ at Fannie. In everyday English – he was cooking the books. The Government Investigation determined that, ‘Chief Financial Officer, Tim Howard, failed to provide adequate oversight to key control and reporting functions within Fannie Mae,’ On June 16, 2006, Rep. Richard Baker, R-La., asked the Justice Department
to investigate his allegations that two former Fannie Mae executives lied to Congress in October 2004 when they denied manipulating the mortgage-finance giant’s income statement to achieve management pay
bonuses. Investigations by federal regulators and the company’s board of directors since concluded that management did manipulate 1998 earnings to trigger bonuses. Raines and Howard resigned under pressure in
late 2004. Howard’s Golden Parachute was estimated at $20 Million!

3. Jim Johnson – Executive Assistant to Walter Mondale, 1977-81 CEO of Fannie Mae, 1991-98. A former executive at Lehman Brothers and who was later forced from his position as Fannie Mae CEO. A look at the Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight’s May 2006 report on mismanagement and corruption inside Fannie Mae, and you’ll see some interesting things about Johnson.

http://www.ofheo.gov/media/pdf/FNMSPECIALEXAM.PDF

Investigators found that Fannie Mae had
hidden a substantial amount of Johnson’s 1998 compensation from the public, reporting that it was between $6 million and $7million when in fact it was $21 million.’ Johnson is currently under investigation for taking illegal loans from Countrywide while serving as CEO of Fannie Mae. Johnson’s Golden Parachute was estimated at $28 Million.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

    1. FRANKLIN RAINES? Raines works for the Obama

Campaign as Chief Economic Advisor.

    2.
TIM HOWARD? Howard is also a Chief Economic Advisor to Obama.

  3. JIM JOHNSON? Johnson was hired as a Senior Obama Finance
Advisor and was selected to run Obama’s Vice Presidential Search Committee.

Observation:
IF OBAMA PLANS ON C

Franklin Rains is the former chairman and chief executive officer
> of Fannie Mae, the government sponsored enterprise started in 1939
> to offer mortgages to Americans wishing to become home owners.
> After serving as budget director under President Bill Clinton, Mr.
> Raines served as CEO at Fannie Mae from 2000 until 2004. While Mr.
> Raines was CEO, Fannie Mae went deep into the practice of buying
> mortgages based on almost no or no money down given to borrowers
> who could not afford them. During this time he received bonuses
> and salary over 90 million dollars.
>
> In 2004 he was offered “early retirement” after the accounting
> practices used at Fannie during his tenure to secure top executive
> bonuses were shown to be fraudulent.
>
> Civil charges were filed against Raines and two other former
> executives which sought $110 million in penalties and $115 million
> in returned bonuses from the three accused.
>
> On April 18, 2008, the government announced a settlement with
> Raines together with J. Timothy Howard, Fannie’s former chief
> financial officer, and Leanne G. Spencer, Fannie’s former controller.
>
> The three executives agreed to pay fines totaling about $3 million,
> which will be paid by Fannie’s insurance policies.
>
> When pressed by the Bush administration to tighten down regulations
> on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, members of congress – Republicans
> and Democrats alike – in positions to pass such regulations, did
> nothing. Today, Fannie Mae owns or guarantees over half of
> America’s 12 trillion dollar mortgage market, and we are in the
> middle of a credit crunch and housing slump brought on in large
> part by government backed Fannie Mae going down this dangerous
> And where is Franklin Raines today? He is a chief economic advisor

There is a sense of elation in the Obama campaign as it was announced that their candidate raised $52 million in June. It’s a massive haul for the presumptive Democratic nominee — $3 million short of the historic mark he hit earlier in the cycle but much larger than the $22 million that John McCain brought in this past month.

The majority of donations, Obama’s campaign manager David Plouffe wrote in an email to supporters, were of the small variety, with the average amount being $68.

An aide to the Senator was ecstatic when asked about the June numbers and said of an earlier Wall Street Journal report that Obama had raised “only” around $30 million: the paper is “embarrassed.”

Of course obama does get to make the final call on what his mouth actually utters(I think!) so he is somewhat responsible. But, why don’t we all send Mr Plouffe an email “thanking” him for turning this whole process into a “racist” ..”"yes, you are, No,I’m not” debacle.

Mc Cain admitted that he doesn’t understand financial markets: Bush knows how to use a computer and send email today we find that Mc Cain doesnt even know how to turn on a computer. Both their policies are similar (maybe under Mc Cain the economy will get worse: no one knows for sure) so know one takes points their: both married relatively hot wives, but Bush’s wife was never addicted to andepressantsnts to tolerate her husband. I guess i have to give it to Bush, what do u think?

Obama compared his running his campaign (as if he and not his campaign manager actually runs it) to Gov. Palin running Wasilla.
Obama won’t even acknowldege Palin is a GOVERNOR.
Now they’re spreading a nasty email saying Palin tried to ban books in ‘96, and some of the books on the list weren’t even published in’96!!

How low has the Obama campaign sunk? What happened to a “different kind of politics?”
Please answer before the Obamaphiles get this questioned banned!

Campaign email: (excerpt)
The McCain campaign is trying to distract voters from the real issues — so we’re going to focus on what they’re trying to hide.

They’ve come out against the life-saving possibilities of stem cell research.

They don’t even mention protecting equal pay for equal work.

They support huge tax cuts for the wealthiest 2% of Americans.

They’ve almost completely ignored the $10 billion we’re spending every month in Iraq.

And they make zero exceptions for a woman’s right to choose — even in cases of rape, incest, or to protect the life of the mother.

If that all sounds like more of the same, that’s because it is. John McCain is offering a third term of the disastrous Bush agenda, so it’s no wonder his campaign would choose to focus on attacks instead of issues.

Please make your donation of $5 or more today:

https://donate.barackobama.com/fightback

I know we’ve asked a lot from supporters like you recently, and many of you contributed just last week.

But the stakes are high, and there are less than 9 weeks before Election Day. It’s going to require unprecedented resources to defeat John McCain and bring about the change America so desperately needs.

Thank you for all you do,

David

Obama for America

Nowhere does he mention where Obama will do a better job. I thought the liberals took the high road.
